As the sun began its descent over the sky in Arusha, casting a warm and golden glow across the horizon, a sense of enchantment filled the air. Surrounded by old tall swaying palm trees, tables were set on MS TCDC’s beautiful large green lawn. This was the backdrop for a dinner and story-telling evening to be enjoyed by the 50 guests who had gathered in Tanzania to celebrate the significant changes brought about by the 12 years of Building Stronger University collaboration between six African and six Danish universities.

When the guests began to arrive, their laughter and animated conversations filled the air, promising a memorable evening of good company and great story telling. When dinner was over and the sun had long since set, a large bonfire was lit. The stage was now set for the storytelling to begin. The 16 stories, all very different in theme and scope, exemplified the impressive mosaic of outcomes and impacts that will remain long after the programme has concluded.

To bring out the significant stories of change from the Building Stronger University programme, representatives from the partnerships had previously participated in an online series of writeshops in ‘Short Stories of Change’. These writeshops aimed to equip both administrative staff and the researchers who had taken part in the Building Stronger Universities programme with the skills to identify, develop, and write stories of change that with personal and qualitative insights added to the traditional reporting formats and therefore resonated with diverse stakeholders.

The guided writing method employed during the writeshop sessions prompted the participants to start with an observed change or significant insight and then to unravel the story step-by-step.

Perspectivity  conducted the writeshops, and we thank them warmly for their collaboration.

The narratives and views expressed in the BSU stories of change are solely those of the authors.
