6/24 BITES
Formal evaluation of social learning
This module is a part of a larger collection of bite-sized learning on facilitating social learning spaces.
This collection of learning bites was created by Danida Fellowship Centre together with Beverly and Etienne Wenger-Trayner and produced by Grape and Brand By Hand. Photos used in the collection were taken by @Crawfurd Media, @E Pictures Media Ltd, @Daniel Samwel and Danida Fellowship Centre, supplemented with Stock Photos.
“But also we found that managers actually are sensitive to these kind of stories, they don’t just want numbers, they also want to know, what change did you make, so these stories also talk to stakeholders…”Etienne Wenger-Trayner
Value story: Amal and the water challenge
Let’s look at a short, fictional story – inspired by real experiences – that shows how a social learning space can demonstrate the value it creates. The story is structured around Beverly and Etienne’s value creation framework.
Click on the circles to review the story and see how it relates to the value creation framework.
Immediate value
“People spoke her language. Not just technical terms, but real frustrations and half-solutions. She felt seen.”
Amal immediately felt relief and connection – her challenges weren’t unique. That first session gave her emotional validation and a sense of belonging.
Potential value
“A peer from Bangladesh shared how they co-designed a flood-resilient pump. It wasn’t a perfect fit, but it sparked an idea.”
Even before she tried anything herself, the story stayed with her and opened new possibilities.
Applied value
“Amal and her team tested a new pump housing, involved local youth, and saw fewer breakdowns and faster fixes.”
Here, she took a risk, adapting the story to her own setting.
Realized value
“Breakdowns dropped by 30%. Trust rose. Community members suggested improvements.”
Amal saw real-world outcomes. Not just better infrastructure, but stronger community engagement.
Learning loop
“She shared her results – and inspired others. By telling her story, Amal sparked new ideas in Ethiopia – continuing the learning journey.”
The loop continues – and the community grows stronger together.
In another module, we looked at recognising value from the inside, as it emerges.
In this module, we’ve focused on how to evaluate and communicate it – so that others can see the difference social learning makes.
