17/24 BITES

Practice matrix – making the state of the practice visible

This module is a part of a larger collection of bite-sized learning on facilitating social learning spaces.

This collection of learning bites was created by Danida Fellowship Centre together with Beverly and Etienne Wenger-Trayner and produced by Grape and Brand By Hand. Photos used in the collection were taken by @Crawfurd Media, @E Pictures Media Ltd, @Daniel Samwel and Danida Fellowship Centre, supplemented with Stock Photos.

How do we make the state of the practice visible?

Watch this short example of how a group uses a practice matrix to map out what they’re doing – and how well – so they can learn from each other.

How does a practice matrix actually work?

Flip through the cards to explore the key steps.

Using the practice matrix online

You can easily run a practice matrix in an online session. Use a shared document, like a Google document or a table on a whiteboard in for example Mural or Miro.

Then the process is exactly the same as in-person. You can use break-out rooms for groups to fill out their column.

Reflection exercise: A practice matrix can help your team or community see what people are doing – and how well

Think of a current issue your team or community is working on – it could be about partnerships, engagement, learning, implementation – or something else.

Ask yourself:

  • Could a practice matrix help you map out what’s really going on?
  • Who would be part of it?
  • What questions would you need to ask?

Work document

Write down your thoughts in the work document – and take them with you to your next team meeting.
