11/24 BITES

Setting the scene for social learning with a value proposition

This module is a part of a larger collection of bite-sized learning on facilitating social learning spaces.

This collection of learning bites was created by Danida Fellowship Centre together with Beverly and Etienne Wenger-Trayner and produced by Grape and Brand By Hand. Photos used in the collection were taken by @Crawfurd Media, @E Pictures Media Ltd, @Daniel Samwel and Danida Fellowship Centre, supplemented with Stock Photos.

In the next step, you’ll explore examples — and try crafting your own value proposition.

Because setting the scene well can be the first act of social learning.

What makes a good value proposition?

A good value proposition clearly communicates why someone should join a space — and what they can expect to gain, contribute, and experience.

See guidelines, examples and what to consider here:

Who is it for?

Be specific — who are the people you’re inviting? Think about:

  • Their background or role
  • Their interests or professional goals
  • What they care about
  • What they mean to each other

“This is for young professionals working on climate adaptation in East Africa. The challenges are the same, even if the contexts are different.”

What do they care about?

What motivates them? What challenges do they face?

  • Learning something practical
  • Making an impact in their community
  • Expanding their network
  • Getting support

“This is an opportunity for you to gain real insight from others facing similar challenges — and exploring new ways forward.”

What are you inviting them into?

What is the actual offer or opportunity?

  • Not a lecture or a workshop
  • A chance to help each other make progress

“Bring a challenge you’re facing. We’ll find out what others are doing about those same challenges and figure out possible next steps together.”

What’s the value?

What difference could it make — for them, their work, their purpose?

  • Inspire action?
  • Offer support?
  • Spark new partnerships or ideas?

“You’ll walk away with new perspectives, practical tools, and a clearer sense of what to try next.”

Example of a value proposition

For Danida fellows working on water governance issues, who care about improving public access to clean water and leading local innovation, we’re creating a peer-driven learning network where you can share strategies, explore real challenges, and build supportive learning partnerships.

By joining, you’ll gain practical insights, expand your network, and find new ways to make a difference in your work.
