5/24 BITES
Value-creation as a perspective on social learning
This module is a part of a larger collection of bite-sized learning on facilitating social learning spaces.
This collection of learning bites was created by Danida Fellowship Centre together with Beverly and Etienne Wenger-Trayner and produced by Grape and Brand By Hand. Photos used in the collection were taken by @Crawfurd Media, @E Pictures Media Ltd, @Daniel Samwel and Danida Fellowship Centre, supplemented with Stock Photos.
“Value is anything that brings you closer to the difference you care to make.”Beverly Wenger-Trayner
Two perspectives on value
In the video you just saw, Etienne talks about two ways of looking at value in a social learning space:
From the inside
How do members know that what they’re doing is moving along?
This is about noticing signs of progress (or not) and adjusting what the community does together as a result of this information.
From the outside
When does a social learning space need to account for the value it’s creating for external stakeholders?
This is about showing and evaluating – often in a formal way – that the space delivers value to stakeholders outside the group.
Reflection exercise: Your turn
Think of a learning or collaboration space you’ve been part of — it could be at work, in your studies, or in your community.
- How did you and the other members know you were making progress?
- Did you ever need to show the value of your work to people outside the group? How?
- Which perspective was dominant — inside progress or outside accountability?
Continue to hear a story on the first perspective.
Work document
You can note down your reflections in your workbook, or just bring one or two examples to mind as we continue.
Amal notices the value. This is a fictional story inspired by real learning experiences.
In another module, we’ll look at the other perspective Etienne mentioned: How to use a value-creation framework to account for the difference a social learning space is making for external stakeholders.
