3/24 BITES

Why social learning matters

This module is a part of a larger collection of bite-sized learning on facilitating social learning spaces.

This collection of learning bites was created by Danida Fellowship Centre together with Beverly and Etienne Wenger-Trayner and produced by Grape and Brand By Hand. Photos used in the collection were taken by @Crawfurd Media, @E Pictures Media Ltd, @Daniel Samwel and Danida Fellowship Centre, supplemented with Stock Photos.

“We can’t wait for someone to study it, and then teach us.
We need to be able to learn on the go.”
Beverly Wenger-Trayner

Reflection exercise: Learning on the go

You’ve just heard Beverly and Etienne talk about why social learning matters — especially in times of uncertainty, when things don’t go as planned, and we need to learn as we go.

TAKE 30 SECONDS TO REFLECT:

Have you experienced “learning on the go” in your own work or life?

  • Something unexpected happened — and you had to adapt.
  • You learned by engaging your experience— not because an expert told you how.
  • Who were you with?
  • How did others help shape what you did?

Social Learning in Action

Let’s look at how social learning can show up in real-world contexts – where people face real challenges and learn together, in the moment.

The examples here are fictional but inspired by real life.

Example 1

Health Sector - Palliative care

"We wanted to make end-of-life care as compassionate and coordinated as possible - for both patients and their families."

Dr. Charles Warren, Palliative Care Consultant

The challenge:

Improving the patient experience during end-of-life care.

Example 2

Public Sector - Coastal water management

"We discovered that our biggest hurdle wasn't the technical work — it was helping different agencies see that we were all protecting the same coastline."

Amina Diallo, Regional Project Coordinator

The challenge:

Aligning coastal water management strategies across municipal, provincial, and environmental agencies.

Example 3

Academia: University research collaboration

"You can’t plan for every challenge that comes up during field research — you need a space to share, test, and refine ideas together, in real time."

Dr. Sofia Karim, Environmental Studies Lecturer

The challenge:

Supporting interdisciplinary teams conducting climate-related research in rural communities.
