From good intentions to lasting change

In every sector, from social enterprises to government, and private business, good intentions about development often meet tough realities. At the recent Results-Based Management learning programme at MS TCDC, participants learned how to manage processes that drive impact and deliver measurable results.

Results based management is not just about checking boxes; it’s about shifting the focus from activities to outcomes—whether that’s reducing poverty, improving education, or boosting healthcare. The approach emphasizes clear goals and robust systems to track progress, ensuring that every dollar spent delivers measurable change.

Fifteen Danida fellows Ethiopia took part in the learning programme, designed to equip them with the tools and mindset needed to ensure their work leads to real impact. The participants who came from six African countries and across the public, private, and civil society sectors were eager to apply this strategy to their work.

It is so easy to get caught up in executing activities within any project. One of my biggest take away is how Results-Based Management helps to keep the focus on delivering real, impactful outcomes for the people and communities we serve, says Chantal Aboulnaga, Researcher at the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development, Egypt.

This course have given me structure in my thinking, and tools to maintain a holistic view on how a projects activities not only benefit the people it should benefit but also plug into the country’s overall objectives of development, says Gathoni Methu, Project Officer, Partnerships PAKPRO, Kenya

The training emphasized that every action counts, and when done right, Results Based Management can turn good intentions into lasting change. This approach is more than just a management tool—it is a powerful way to ensure development work truly makes a difference.

Results Based Management challenges organisations to define what success looks like and to measure progress along the way, making sure their efforts truly benefit the communities they serve. It is shifting the focus from activities to outcomes, says Edson Yingyi, MS TCDC’s facilitator of the Results-Based Management learning programme.
