In this 5-minute film, social learning theorists and consultants, Etienne and Beverly Wenger-Trayner, briefly explain the concept of ‘Communities of Practice’.
The term Community of Practice was first coined by Etienne Wenger-Trayner in the 1990s, where he described it as follows: “Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.”
The theory has evolved since then, and today Communities of Practice represent a learning modality that sits within a broader social learning theory that Etienne and Beverly have developed – and continue to develop – together.
Building on this evolving framework, we at Danida Fellowship Centre have, over the past year, been exploring how the theory and practice of social learning can be applied to transform not only individual understanding and agency, but also broader systems and networks of collaboration and change.
