During the first week of June 2013, representatives of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Consultative Research Committee for Development Research, and Danida Fellowship Centre visited Nepal.
The purpose of the trip was to launch the South Driven Development Research Programme (SDDRP), where researchers in the South define the research topic, identify Danish partners and take the lead of the projects.
Together with the Danish Embassy in Nepal consultations on the SDDRP were undertaken with major stakeholders, among them universities and research institutions.
A workshop was held in Kathmandu to introduce the 2014 Call to interested Nepalese researchers.
The launching of the SDDRP in Nepal proved to be successful. The stakeholders consulted showed a keen interest in the programme and more than 30 researchers and others attended the workshop.
A similar launch was conducted in Accra in 2011 when the SDDRP was introduced in Ghana and has proved to be a very good starting point for a South driven research collaboration.
Nepal has been selected as a new country under the SDDRP due to research strategic considerations as Nepal is one of the partner countries under the Building Stronger Universities in Developing Countries initiative.
The Danish Embassy in Nepal considers the SDDRP to be highly relevant and important and has been very supportive in the up-start of the programme.
We welcome Nepal as part of the SDDRP and are looking forward to the collaboration.
