Save the date: On October 3rd, add your voice to the call for more women in research

03-09-24

You are invited to an online conversation on October 3rd from 3 – 5 pm EAT / 2 – 4 pm CET to help finalise the “More Women in Research” manifesto, a powerful call to action developed by 50 women researchers to address the underrepresentation of women in academia, particularly in Africa.

In March 2024, 50 women researchers from across Africa gathered for the More Women in Research seminar. They spent four days discussing the unique challenges faced by women in research and academia in Africa and ultimately began the work of drafting a manifesto calling for more women in research.

Now, seven months later, a draft manifesto is ready. Before its official launch at the YouLead Summit in November 2024 in Tanzania, we call on all stakeholders – from women researchers, vice-chancellors to government institutions and media – to add your valuable input.

So please join us in breaking the glass ceiling and increasing the number of women in academia and research! Make a note of the date: 3 October 3rd , 3 – 5 pm EAT / 2 – 4 pm CET or save the link in your diary.

The manifesto “More Women in Research” is grounded in the belief that gender inclusive research teams drive innovation and improve problem solving. Despite this, women remain underrepresented in research, making up less than 30% of the global research community. In Africa, women hold only 21% of chancellor positions, 14% of vice-chancellor positions, and 26% of registrar positions in the top 97 universities.

The final manifesto that will be launched at the YouLead Summit 4th November aims to address these disparities and its recommendations target various stakeholders, including women in research, government institutions, universities, research institutions, publishers, funders, the private sector, civil society and the media.

Co-created by the Danida Fellowship Centre, MS TCDC, and YouLead Africa, the “More Women in Research” seminar held in March 2024 was part of Danida Fellowship Centre’s ongoing annual Science Engagement Days. The same group supports the official launch of the manifesto set for 4 November 2024.
