HEalth ISSUES AND
TRAVEL insurance

On this page, you will find practical information on who to contact in case of illness, emergencies, or lost belongings.

You can also read about the travel insurance coverage and – importantly – about the prior approval you must apply for with the insurance company before departure, if you have existing medical conditions.

Assistance in case of illness, pains, stolen belongings etc.

The Danida Fellowship Centre Reception can be contacted by phone on +45 35 36 13 22 during opening hours 10 AM – 3PM or by e-mail on dfc@dfcentre.dk. They can assist you by explaining your options, providing information about how to book medical appointments and file a police report in case of theft, etc.

Outside office hours, you may call our emergency phone number +45 60 92 62 88 for urgent matters which cannot wait until the next working day.

General practitioner, GP

A GP is usually the first medical professional to contact in the event of illness. The opening hours at GP clinics are generally weekdays between 8 am and 4 pm and by appointment only.

You will be required to pay for your consultation unless you are on a long term stay and therefore hold the yellow health insurance card issued under the Danish National Health Insurance Scheme. Your expenses might be covered by the insurance policy, subject to approval of your claim. Please see the insurance section below.

Urgent medical help outside office hours

For urgent medical help in case of acute illness, call the medical helpline staffed by nurses and doctors. They will assess your symptoms and determine the next steps. You must call the medical helpline before visiting an emergency room:

In Copenhagen, call +45 1813.
In the Aarhus area, call +45 70 11 31 31.

If case of serious injury or life-threatening illness, call 112 for the Danish emergency services.
If you are in a health emergency, please inform Danida Fellowship Centre of your situation. We can also help you with insurance related questions.

TraVEL Insurance

Danida Fellowship Centre has taken out a travel insurance to cover all its fellows on the journey to and from Danmark and for the duration of the study stay with us. An insurance card will be sent to you.

Should you need assistance with insurance related matters, please contact Danida Fellowship Centre, dfc@dfcentre.dk or on +45 35 36 13 22.

Key areas of coverage are delayed luggage, stolen personal effects, personal liability and acute illness.
Please also read the section about Prior Medical Approval. All claims are subject to approval by the insurance company.

Medical expences

Danida Fellowship Centre fellows staying in Denmark for less than 90 days are covered by the travel insurance for certain medical costs. The insurance covers medical and dentist assistance in relation to acute illness which has occurred whilst in Denmark, and which require immediate treatment.
You must initially pay for the consultation. All reimbursements are subject to approval of your claim by the insurance company.

Fellows staying in Denmark for more than 90 days apply for a ‘Yellow Card’,- a Health Insurance Card (‘sundhedskort’). The General Practitioner assigned to you will be stated on the card. The travel insurance provides the same medical cover as mentioned above until the Yellow Card is received. With this card you are covered under the Danish National Health insurance Scheme.

Prior Medical Approval

In general, the travel insurance only covers damages in connection with acute illness and serious injury.

It is your responsibility to obtain Prior Medical Approval before departure in the following situations:

  • If you have an existing or chronic medical condition*
  • If you have been injured before a trip
  • If you have any other reason to believe that you may need medical treatment when in Denmark
  • Pre-existing conditions may include, but are not limited to: Pregnancy and related medical issues, chronic diseases ( for example high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer), and recent diagnoses or injuries incurred immediately prior to traveling. Please refer to the Danida Fellowship Centre guide for examples of conditions that require prior approval.

The insurance company Europæiske ERV, must have received your application form no later than 2 weeks before you travel to Denmark. The insurance is valid once you have received approval of your application from Europæiske ERV.

Failing to apply for and obtain such approval may result in the insurance company declining to cover a potential later claim for medical expenses incurred due to such medical condition. Please contact the insurance company if you need guidance on whether you need a Prior Medical Approval (LINK)

You will find the form and instructions on how to proceed with the application here.
