The winner of the Danida Alumni Prize 2021 is Dr Olman Segura-Bonilla from Costa Rica

The Danida Alumni Prize 2021 is awarded to an alum who, based on his or her Danida-funded studies, has contributed to positive change in their home country or area of employment by using innovation and new knowledge as tools of change to further the green transition.

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the Danida Alumni Prize 2021 is Dr Olman Segura-Bonilla, Director General at the International Centre of Economic Policies for Sustainable Development (CINPE), in Costa Rica. Dr Segura-Bonilla is awarded the prize for his pioneering and tireless efforts to use innovation and new knowledge to advance the green transition in Costa Rica. The award ceremony will take place on 3 November 2021 and live-streamed 5.15 – 5.30 pm DK/ CET (10.15 – 10.30 am Costa Rica).

The festive award ceremony is an open event and therefore free for everyone to join. It is our hope that Danida Fellowship Centre partners, alumni and friends from around the world will participate online and with your presence contribute to making it a celebratory and memorable occasion.

Flemming Møller Mortensen, Denmark’s Minister for Development Cooperation will be part of the award ceremony with a special video message to Dr Olman Segura-Bonilla, while Margrethe Holm Andersen, Danida Fellowship Centre’s Board Chair, will present her motivation speech to Dr Segura-Bonilla online. Erik Høeg, Denmark’s Ambassador to Colombia, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela will extend his congratulations oline from Bogotá, and Peter Rock Okwoko, 2020’s Danida Alumni Prize winner, will be at the conference in Costa Rica and will present the award in person. The award ceremony is part of the 17th International Globelics Conference.

Dr Olman Segura-Bonilla earned his PhD in 2000 as a Danida fellow at Aalborg University where he participated in the research project Sustainable Development Strategies for Central America under Danida’s Enhancing Research Capacity, ENRECA programme.

Danida Fellowship Centre inaugurated the Danida Alumni Prize in 2017 to celebrate the Danida alumni and their achievements around the world. Since the 1960s almost 30.000 individuals from the developing and growth countries that Denmark collaborates with have received a Danida fellowship either as Masters or PhD students or participants in Danida Fellowship Centre’s capacity developing learning programmes. The first prize was awarded to Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.
