Research in numbers 2022

Countries covered by ongoing projects
Danida Fellowship Centre supports research project activities in 19 countries, all Danida partner countries with either targeted or expanded development cooperation. Some projects are partnering with two or three countries. The map below shows how many ongoing projects there are in the Danida partner countries. See more about the supported research projects on the Danida Research Portal.

Number of applicants and gender diversity
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs selected 21 new research projects from the 2022 application round, 7 of which are led by female and 14 by male project coordinators. In the 2022 application round, 114 project applications were submitted, 21 by female and 93 by male project leads.

Across all the 21 selected projects, 159 male researchers and 121 female researchers are involved. When calculating the allocated months budgeted for male and female researchers across projects, the male researchers will work 1312 months while female researchers will work 1308 months.

While the above figures show progress towards gender balance compared to previous years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has acknowledged the need for further efforts to be made in this area. Several new initiatives will be implemented, and in the future, projects will be asked to consider the gender composition of teams in more detail and to aim for a more balanced distribution. In addition, the opportunity to include a co-project lead in the projects has been introduced, allowing younger researchers to gain experience with managing research projects of this size.

Selected research projects by theme
In 2022, the overall theme for the call for applications  was climate change, nature, and the environment. All selected research projects from the 2022 application round, therefore, relate to climate change in various ways.

In addition to the overall theme of climate change, the following themes are the most predominant: Health (7), and Natural resource management (7), Energy (6). Other themes include Gender equality (4), Agricultural production (4), Humanitarian assistance and development (2), Water management and sanitation (2), Economic development and value chains (2), Aquatic environment and resources (2), Food security and safety (2), Production, industry and labour market (2), Conflict, peace and security (1), State building, governance and civil society (1), Urban development (1), and Waste management (1).

Note that a research project often works with  two or more themes. The number of themes does not equal the number of projects.
