Climate stories featured in African media are often sourced from international news platforms. Therefore, many climate stories in African media do not fully explore issues and challenges relevant to African audiences. Nor do the international stories make use of African research knowledge and locally available climate expertise – or place the local knowledge in a global context.
On this background, 24 journalists from media across Africa took part in the Danida Fellowship Centre’s learning programmme “Reporting from the African frontline of the global climate crisis” focusing on science journalism, constructive journalism, pan-African climate campaigning, and exposure to climate expertise and solutions.
A substantive part of the programme was a knowledge exchange with 24 Danida-supported climate researchers. Both the researchers and the journalists’ takeaways and outputs exceeded expectations with more than 150 pieces of climate content in 30 prominent African media reaching hundreds of thousands of people. In addition to paving the way for more knowledge-based climate news and feature stories relevant to Africans, an informal working network of climate researchers and journalists across the continent was established.
