Nicola Balbarini, Water Resources Expert, International Development at DHI. Dr Balbarini works with groundwater, hydrogeological and groundwater quality modelling. He has managed and participated in several international projects leading to the successful development of digital Decision Support System DSS) as well as real-time monitoring and early warning systems to support integrated water resources management.

Jan Kwiatkowski, Vice President, Water Authorities at DHI. He has 25+ years of experience in water resources management, flood management, environmental impact assessment and process optimization. He advised key national water institutions, worked with large industrial clients and served water operators in major cities. He has worked in major water-oriented organisations: DHI, Nalco, Kemira and the World Bank. His professional goal is to make a positive impact by helping to solve complex water issues.

Mekuria Beyene, Water Resources Specialist, International Development Department at DHI. Dr Beyene has a long and successful career as a team leader and Decision Support System expert on complex water resources management projects, in both Africa and Europe during his 30+ years of work within the water sector. He is currently leading the development of an Operational DSS in Tanzania.

The webinar will focus on how Decision Support System (DSS) tools and capacities can help ensure the sustainable development of river basins. DSS’s supports multi-disciplinary planning and management across several temporal and spatial scales by enabling data and knowledge sharing, converting complex model outputs into meaningful indicators, and combining these with desk study information in Cost Benefit and Multi-Criteria Decision analyses of different future planning scenarios.

This webinar will present how DSS systems can support and help achieve integrated water resources management. Two examples of digital DSS from Tanzania and Spain will be presented to demonstrate the opportunities for using state-of-the-art technology to support robust decision-making.
