Learning and leading together

In this newsletter, we have compiled a selection of stories that explore how networks and collaborative learning can open up new ways of understanding and responding to today’s global challenges. We hope these stories will offer both inspiration and insight into how collaborative learning approaches can become powerful drivers of change when adopted by networks and the people who lead them

By Sophie Amalie Eiholm Kjær

Today’s global challenges are complex, interdisciplinary and rapidly changing. Finding meaningful solutions requires learning from others and drawing on lived experiences. This calls for a type of leadership that is adaptive, relational and network-oriented.

The Danida Fellows Network
Every year, around 1,000 professionals involved in Denmark’s Danida programmes take part in Danida Fellowship Centre’s learning activities, alongside the many early-career researchers who are PhD students in Danida-supported research projects. Together, these fellows form a vast and diverse network, rich in insights, resources and experiences, offering enormous potential for all members to draw upon.

At Danida Fellowship Centre, we consider networks to be key drivers of change. We recognise the value of continued learning from and with one another – also after fellows have completed their research or learning activities and returned to their homes and workplaces. We believe that bringing together diverse knowledge across this global network of actors, connected by shared experiences and a drive to make a difference, helps Danida fellows move closer to solutions that address present and emerging global challenges. This belief underpinned the launch of the Danida Fellows Network in 2016 – and it remains our guiding principle today.

Network leadership and social learning approaches
Networks do not build and sustain themselves; they require intentional, ongoing effort to grow, evolve, and remain meaningful to their members. This is why we deliberately focus on enhancing network leadership capabilities.

Network leadership differs from traditional top-down leadership approaches. Instead of asserting authority, network leaders create value by nurturing trust, opening channels for knowledge, stories and experiences to flow across boundaries, and by supporting members to organise around shared interests. This approach can be particularly powerful in uncovering skills and expertise, amplifying diverse voices, and coordinating collective action.

A key role for a network leader is to create conditions in which the network can continually co-create and redefine its purpose. Questions such as What value does the network bring to its members?” help guide the network’s evolving shared understanding.

By creating spaces where people can engage, share perspectives and refine their thinking through conversations, new ideas and possibilities often emerge. These spaces also help members build confidence and the competencies needed to navigate complexity collectively. In our efforts to  support network leadership, we have found that collaborative formats and structures are particularly effective in encouraging Danida fellows to initiate dialogue and lead activities around the issues that matter to them.

How we do it
Danida Fellowship Centre supports network leadership competencies through a variety of learning opportunities, tools and dialogue spaces, dedicated to the more than 70 network leaders in the global Danida Fellows Network, as well as other Danida fellows who wish to learn how to unlock the potential of networks and take a leadership role in convening them.

In this special newsletter about networks and collaborative learning we invite you to learn more about how we put this into practice.
