Key individuals from Bogotá, directly involved in the transformation of the city’s waste management, will attend a learning programme on Solid Waste Management and Technologies facilitated by DTU 7 – 25 October 2024 in Denmark. Over the course of the three weeks, we will follow Sandra and Felipe’s journey and document their learning experiences and progress. We will share regular updates on LinkedIn, highlighting the new insights they acquire and the potential impact of their training on Bogotá’s waste management transformation.
Both Sandra and Felipe work with organisations that play a crucial role in transforming Bogotá’s waste management system, respectively Colombia’s National Control Authority – Superintendencia de Servicios Públicos Domiciliarios, and the agency responsible for managing solid waste in Bogotá – Unidad Administrativa Especial de Servicios Públicos (UAESP).

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is facilitating the waste management learning programme that features a combination of university lectures, presentations and dialogues with leading experts. It also includes several exposure visits to recycling facilities, waste-to-energy plants, deposit-return systems and construction waste sorting sites.
Throughout the programme, Sandra and Felipe will develop an action plan specifically designed to address Bogotá’s waste management challenges. Their goal is to implement the plan upon their return, thus playing a key role in transitioning the city’s waste handling system to a more sustainable model. Copenhagen Municipality is supporting this effort under the Strategic Sector Cooperation between Bogota and Copenhagen.

Twenty-five water professionals will join the Solid Waste Management and Technologies learning programme. They come from China (3), Colombia (5), Ghana (4), India (3), Indonesia (1), Kenya (5) and Thailand (4). The course is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of modern waste management systems, addressing the complexities and challenges involved. It equips attendees with cutting-edge knowledge and practical skills, drawing on the current practices and the historical developments that have shaped Denmark’s waste management approach.
Participants will gain invaluable lessons that they can adapt and apply to their own waste management challenges, fostering sustainable development in their respective regions.
