Supporting global energy expertise

In 2025, close to one fifth of all Danida Fellowship Centre learning activities focused on equipping participants from partner countries with the knowledge and tools to drive sustainable energy transitions.

As climate change and energy insecurity put pressure on national systems, countries face the dual challenge of maintaining stable, accessible power while rapidly shifting to green energy.

The challenges vary widely between countries, but Danida Fellowship Centre’s energy courses break complex topics into actionable, practical themes. Participants learn to plan national electricity systems, improve energy efficiency in buildings and industries, model interactions between different power sources, and develop large-scale solutions such as offshore wind.

“We work together with the Danish Energy Agency, where each year we prioritise which learning courses to offer. In 2025 we delivered seven energy-related courses,” says Helle Jørgensen, Capacity Development Advisor, Danida Fellowship Centre.

Even though courses take place in Denmark – responsible for just 0.1 per cent of global emissions – they demonstrate how a small nation can make a global impact through partnerships, technology, and knowledge sharing. And because participants often come from technical and institutional backgrounds very different from Denmark, peer learning is central. By learning from each other, participants strengthen both their technical expertise and their ability to create enabling frameworks for renewable energy at the national level.

In addition to peer learning, all Danida Fellowship Centre courses include four mandatory learning elements – learning by seeing, learning by applying, translating learning into action, and passing on learning – ensuring that knowledge and competences are applied and shared widely, helping partner countries accelerate their energy transitions.
